Project idea

Designed to blend with the surrounding area, Scottsdale
Digestive Clinic takes inspiration from McDowell
Sonoran Preserve’s nature trails and scenic views of
Northern Scottsdale. Focusing on value-based care
rather than volume-based, the clinic prioritizes the
patient experience, mimicking the preserve’s winding,
curved trails to create natural wayfinding and utilizing
nature inspired materials and finishes to contrast the
typical clinical feel that often comes with
healthcare interiors.

Project description

The Scottsdale Digestive Clinic will specialize in preventing, diagnosing, and treating digestive and liver disorders. Its main goal is to advance the delivery of care for patients suffering from all digestive health conditions.
Along with understanding and improving the patient experience, various design features have been utilized to improve employee interaction. Empathy, efficiency, and flexibility are crucial to the success of both this design and
the clinic’s future. Some implemented features include:
-ADA restrooms located throughout the clinic for patients' convenience and peace of mind
-Variety of seating postures to fit preference and physical needs of all patients
-Prioritizing the employee experience by providing
exterior views
-Charting alcoves placed throughout the clinic to
improve efficiency and convenience for nurses
-Spread apart clinical work areas to better oversee
and get to/from exam rooms
-Check-out is conveniently located while still providing
privacy for prescription/appointment discussion

Technical information

CHECK-IN/WAITING AREA:
The curving walls, organic forms, and desert-inspired color palette provide a natural form of wayfinding, along with creating a sense of familiarity for both patients and staff.
CORRIDOR:
Patients are provided with various wayfinding cues, including signage and inlaid lighting as a guiding presence. Charting alcoves are subtly and conveniently placed throughout the space for staff’s convenience.
EXAM ROOM:
Drawing from the natural scenery in northern Scottsdale, the exam rooms strive to relieve any anxieties by tying the indoors to the outdoor aesthetic. Patient comfort is
prioritized with window treatments and privacy curtains included to meet all preferences.
STAFF LOUNGE:
Providing the nurses and practitioners a social yet private area of their own, the location and design of the staff lounge proves the facility’s belief that the staff experience is just as important as the patients’. Acoustical wall panels, storage lockers, and a variety of seating postures provide enough option to meet everyone’s preference and ability to make the space their own.
INFUSION SUITE:
The infusion suite provides patients and their families privacy during treatment without inhibiting staff from supervising at a centralized location. Outdoor views, along with the abundance of natural light, helps to counteract any nerves and provide a positive atmosphere.
