• Conceptual idea:
The idea of the project is to create a new nest for art and culture, an inclusive space where various activities take place and where different artists can emerge and position Burkina Faso as an international benchmark.
• Inspiration:
To redesign the DÉSIRÉ BONOGO popular theater, we took as inspiration the African culture, local art pieces and the vernacular architecture of Burkina Faso. Our purpose is to create contemporary architecture with a local flavor, referencing local culture and tradition.
• Shape:
The cylindrical shape of the building enables construction material savings, economic savings and energy efficiency. Also the curved shape makes the sound waves soften,
reducing noise, making it the most optimal shape for a
theater. But also the cylindrical shape works as a singular landmark in the landscape, which can be easily recognized from a distance.
• Function:
It was decided to concentrate in a single building the three areas
proposed by the organizers (work, show and labo), with this we freed up space for green areas, gardens and trees.
Functionally the building is designed to carry out different activities in
addition to those of a theater. The hall or reception space is designed as an open space, where fairs and art exhibitions can be installed, therefore it works as a gallery. On the third level are the garden terraces, spaces that can be used for small music shows or outdoor learning classrooms.
• Accessibility (access for all):
One of the most complex problems that the old theater had was the lack of accessibility for disabled people. With the idea that the new theater is an inclusive space, a ramp is designed that connects the hall with the grandstand, improving the circulation of people.
• Materiality (constructive technology):
The project is designed to be built with brick, local material that abounds in the city, reinforced concrete and metal structure on the roof, the idea is to use
materials and local workmanship in an innovative
and modern way in a unique building.
