Project idea

The project Theatre Populaire Idea has been taken from the culture, economic and locally avalaible material of that place and mainly focused on their climatic conditions and give them a good climatic response.

Also to create sufficient and good spaces for the artist and performers in that theatre and making that environment comfortable for all types of people in CDC complex. The main idea of the project is to provide the best with passive strategies and low cost materials.

Project description

Our design is all about strategies with low cost and to give a better response to hot climate. Landscaping is the important element in any design which maintain the climate and give soothing feeling to the users. These two combinations we have applied in our design that is maintaining temperature with strategies and nature by considering all basic functions and area of a theatre.

The work area contains various rooms such as sewing workshop, backstage, a sitting space, meeting room technical rooms etc. it basically focusses on the spaces that the performers need. The backstage and the stage cover has been double-heighted. The sitting space has been given for the performers to relax and have their refreshments there.
The Art Gallery mainly consist of a space where windows are having shading devices so that no direct sunlight could enter into the building. Apart from this, open to sky courtyard is given which has a good interactive space, it contains a pit which is two steps down, where people can sit and have interaction.

the labo area is a resource, documentation and training centre which is directly visible and connected to amphitheatre. In this building we have used various strategies to compete with hot climate by brick jaali which helps in cross ventilation, passive solar concept which reduces warmer environment inside and in winters provide good amount of heat. Ground floor consist resources and documentation centre and first floor have educational spaces for various artist activities. The furniture is made up of bamboo which is easy to made and low cost and also comfortable.

Restaurant is the part of show area which have seating space outside the restaurant also under the cover. The building roof is slopy which helps in water drainage coming to the bamboo pipes. The roof is made up of terracotta tiles and like labo and work area, it also has U-shaped shading device which helps in protecting from sunrays.

Technical information

USE OF RED TRAP BRICK BOND
Strength of wall is not compromised, it remains same as traditional masonry wall. Cavity induced in wall provides better thermal insulation, resulting in cooler interiors during summer and warmer interiors during winter. It not only provides insulation but also needs 25% lesser bricks than flemish bond.

USE OF EARTHEN POTS ON SLABS
Using earthern pots on the precast slab act as roof insulation and interior doesn't get warmer.

CROSS VENTILATION USING BRICK JAALIS
Brick jaalis are a green tool can help you reduce the energy load of cooling and the costs associated with it. The apertures in the jali efficiently lessen the ingress of heat in the daytime. They also block the entry of direct sunlight, making for pleasant interiors.

PASSIVE SOLAR CONCEPT USING SHADING DEVICES
The passive solar building system has the advantage of blocking almost 99.9% of the ultraviolet radiation energy. Preventing this would save the interior fabrics as well as decor and make them long lasting. Summer is made cooler and comfortable – it keeps the interior cool during the hot season

USING MUD AS A PLASTER
The use of mud plasters maintains the breathing quality of the wall made of natural materials, enhancing the thermal comfort by keeping habitable temperatures inside.

WATER DRAINAGE
By using bamboo as a pipe , this method is taking place.
Bamboo pipes are used to divert perennial springs on the hilltops to the lower reaches by gravity. The channel sections, made of bamboo, divert and convey water to the plot site where it is distributed without leakage into branches, again made and laid out with different forms of bamboo pipes.

RAIN WATER HARVESTING
Rain water harvesting is one of the best way to save water and use it for many other purposes.
Through this tank, the collected water is transferred into the underground tank and then can be used whenever needed.
