The idea was to develop an environmentally sustainable Swahili commercial building (mixed urban development)
The design aimed to demonstrate understanding of the local setting, uses of private and public spaces, movement patterns as well as form design.
It was important that the proposed development maintains the existing historical and urban qualities that create the strong identity of the Swahili Architecture
The project focuses on design for warm and humid climate. It also draws emphasis to the local dimension and reflects the local context and culture as well as demonstrating clear principles of sustainable construction
The design accommodates the following facilities
-Residential Apartments
-Shops
-Restaurant
-Offices
-Basement Parking
The spaces are designed with the aim of maintaining thermal contral
This is seen in the following
Use of thick walls
Walls are very thick 500mm and are constructed out of coral blocks and lime as mortar
Use of light-coloured finishes
This is so as to reflect as much heat as possible to reduce the amount of absorbed by the building therefore providing cool spaces
The design also aims at conserving the rich Swahili culture of the area
This is seen in the use of Swahili motifs in decoration throughout the design
