Project idea

Industrial complex Old Herold is located in the northwestern part of Trencin.
Locality of "Zamostie" (part of the city at the other side of river) is predominantly filled by residential structures, which industrial production significantly contrasts with.

Due to its exceptional location, the area bordered by living and yet close to the historical center of the city gets the potential of the new city center and a unique platform for life.

Project description

We decided to revitalize the 4 reservoirs that are located on the south-eastern side of the unused industrial area of Old Herold.

Their advantageous location and bordering Žabinská Street acquire the potential of the character of the entrance into the revitalized new city center.

Their task is therefore to create a communal and multi-functional meeting point and at the same time to continue to represent their industrial character.

Technical information

The whole program consists of the 4 different answers of forms of reservoirs,
"game of constructions" which can be filled by various functions supporting the new living platform.

1st reservoir is "naked one". It tells a story about the form represented by uncovering the whole facade and making it able to absorb the multifunctionality. Therefore it becomes a pavilion for playground or cultural events.

2nd one is called "plant pot", because of it's green form of representing the terrace for the bistro. Reservoir is also underlined by passage which creates ability of a small covered urban square in-between of bistro and pavilion.

3rd reservoir "the young one" is representing an idea of a gastro function. It's need of acceptable physical conditions, monumental view of a genius loci of the industrial area defined it's new contemporary facade.

4th reservoir tells a story about a "veteran" who was proposed as a refurbished gallery and event space just from inside. The exterior form of this reservoir is being "untouched" and represents it self as a symbol of a memory.

Opening the whole site from the Zabinska Street by erasing the area fence creates opportunity of the new living street, supported by underlining passage in the second reservoir to access the whole industrial courtyard as a new square / corso / boulevard inbetween the reservoirs and old functional skeleton object (proposed as an open supergrid botanical garden)

Area is also supported by transforming the industrial conveyor to the pedestrian bridge and by connecting it to the old unused railway bridge (consider as a new pedestrian zone over the river) to the historical center of Trencin.
