Living in a dense environment must not mean the loss of an idyllic neighborhood!
The task was to design a quarter, that could fight the acute problem of housing shortage in the small, beautiful south-german town Konstanz at the Bodensee. A highly dense neighorhood should be developed next to a permeable one with a lot of villas and single houses.
The adaptation towards the villas was achieved by taking one very small component and puzzling it together so that it would become one big block but still having a permeable and fragmented structure - always forming a street and a garden side.
Each block would have one community garden in the courtyard, as well as roof gardens and private gardens. Like this a heterogene neighborhood with a variety of housing types would is generated.
The quarter also includes public function like a guest house, a café, smaller shops, a gym and a rehearsal room. The Dichterviertel becomes a part of hte whole Konstanz community, is not only taking free, green space but also giving back chances and opportunities to the town.
Two layers of plaster - one smooth and one washed, so that the grains become visible - create the playful facades...
