The project aimed to create a new idea for urban farming. The sky farm uses various technologies to increase the food production in urban areas. The hydroponic system is used on most of the floors of the tower. The project is located on premises of a mental health institution in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. Therefore, apart from food production, the Sky Farm is a place for horticular therapy, where the clients can use plants and gardening as a therapeutic tool.
The project involved an extensive research into the greenhouse typology, passive ventilation, passive energy production and structure. In addition, due to its function, the logistics had to be well designed to ensure that the building is behaving as a well functioning machine.
Due to its size (100 metres) and big amount of glazed ares, the project is a combination of an aesthetic design with technical thinking.
