Project description

The design studio was combined with a study tour objective to visit a city that has a prominence of institutional and
architectural characteristics. Ahmedabad is also known as ‘The Architecture Hub of India’ due to its varied yet profound architectural
styles and urban character.
‘’Architecture is always a reflection of its culture’’. The Cultural Centre complex of Ahmedabad has been selected as a site consist of two
existing prominent buildings designed by eminent architects. The cultural complex includes the ‘Sanskar Kendra Museum’ build in 1954
and designed by the Ar. Le Corbusier. It is a city museum reflecting the history, art, culture, and architecture of Ahmedabad. Another
building showcasing a piece of brutalist architecture ‘Tagor Memorial Hall’ designed by Ar. B. V. Doshi in 1966.
Cultural Centre of Ahmedabad had separate pavilions and areas for different subjects like anthropology, natural history, archaeology,
monumental sculptures, workshops and depots, folklores in the open air. It also included a pavilion for theatre called the miracle box.
But out of the whole planned cultural centre, only the museum and theater was built. Sanskar Kendra is currently in the utmost state of
despair due to poor maintenance. The brief look at this as an opportunity to design and revive an Urban cultural centre cum Institute
which not only will cater to tourism needs but as well as local needs to make the campus sustainable.
