The design challenge is to modify the Kathajodi riverfront at Cuttack, Odisha and beautify the area and make it economically profitable by providing commercial and recreational zones best suited for the local people as well as tourists and to make the use of area wisely by organising it properly.
The project comprises mostly of open and semi open spaces. The idea is to provide spaces for public interaction and enhance the culture and tradition of Cuttack through the design. It demands areas for exhibition pavilions, food courts, restaurants, information centre, interpretation centre, museum, parks and many more uniquely designed interactive spaces.
At first, in the masterplan various areas are zoned according to the climatic and geographical conditions of that area and then particular shapes for the built ups are chucked out and then the planning is carried out accordingly. The concept of the design is to showcase the contemporary colonial architecture throughout the project as Cuttack shares a history with colonial architecture. The red and beige colours are used in the design. Starting from the street lights to the sit outs everything gives a vibe of colonial architecture. A oval leaf like shape is considered and almost all the structures are designed in that pattern. The shape of the built ups are in irregular shapes in contrast to the regular linear and rectangular pattern of colonial architecture to give it a contemporary look. Doors and windows were the main attraction of that period so they are even used over here but with less ornamentation again to break that typical style. A small boating area is provide with two bridges to connect two ends - a feature that usually comes up on our mind when we think of British architecture.
