SAARGAALAY-Sustainable Homes for Artists
Amidst all the upcoming modern phase of architecture, where have we lost our roots?
Architecture has now evolved from being from the end users' point of view to being all about aesthetics and commercialisation, it’s time we she shifts back our focus to the end user and design, develop, cater to end user needs. The current architectural marvels should develop the community spaces and bring back the old style of living together and interacting rather than in a cloud of limited people and spaces to move around. The challenge revolves around what can be inherited- or brought back from history into our present and solutions in terms of design that can cater to need of this inheritance.
The design proposal that I have presented is based on the rich and traditional craftsmen and artists of Aurangabad who have lost the value of their crafts/art in the modern era of westernisation. The crafts selected are- Bidri, Paithani, Kagazi which individually have been an item of trade and commerce in the past. The need to revive these was realised by me, when we visited Aurangabad. The design proposal is thus -Artist VILLAGE AT AURANGABAD FOR TOURISTS. It would be a journey for the tourists to visit this village explore the different artforms, take part in workshops and along with this get the idea of the community life of each of the artist typology. The 3 arts are carried out by different communities- the paithani by Hindus, and the kagaz and bidri work by Muslims. Thus, it is an interesting amalgamation of the two communities and their livelihood with the intention to
promote the craft. The entire proposal is bought out by keeping in mind the climatic conditions of the city and hence a sustainable material and planning approach has been taken ahead.
