Project idea

The topic of the Institute of Image and Sound with the motif of Double Game required the development of a new methodology of architectural design based on the concepts of metamateriality, functional geometry and structural kinetics. The project is located in the core of the city of Belgrade, has a very recognisable atmosphere, and represents a very important place throughout the history of Belgrade. It was crucial to fit into the existing condition of the site, while maintaining its identity and assigning new features that enhance this space. Because of this fact, the concept of a hybrid structure, which is formally transformed from a canopy into a ground floor, in accordance with a program that supports, permeating existing objects, was a way to respond to the theme of Double Play.

Project description

Kosančićev venac, as one of the oldest parts of the city, is a spot where some of the historically most important buildings of Belgrade architecture are found, of which the population may not be sufficiently aware. One of the main goals of the project was to give new meaning to these buildings / ruins, connect them to the whole, implement new programs and expand into the surrounding space. The first step included the analysis and valorization of the objects on the site. It was realized that a significant number of objects were of great cultural importance. However, the fact is that many of them are neglected and not in such good shape, results in a desire to preserve and emphasize their importance. Buildings on the perimeter of the slope of Kosančićev venac have been identified as relevant for this type of spatial intervention. Studying the existing architecture, it was concluded that the dimensions of the objects, as well as their previous program, were very suitable for accommodating the newly created program in them. Then came the series of abstract models that were used for constructing the spaces of images and sounds in order to identify them and to decide how can they be interpreted in the project. Canopy structure was modeled many times, to also show the ways that the existing and new can be connected, while forming different spaces and looking at the possibilities and risks that they have. The next step was deciding to keep the facades of the buildings, and to allow the canopy structure to "pass" through them, thus creating an enclosed space, in which the Institute's halls for sound and picture were placed, with communications and other necessary amenities. The continuous extension of the structure made it possible for the new hall roof to be a place of movement for those located on the level above. Thus, the layout of the major programs within the project has been resolved by the conversion of space. Later, when more precisely defined, a green zone extending between two blocks on Kosančićev venac, along the existing plateau, was selected as the site. The continuous structure permeates through the aisles that make the atmosphere of the Kosančićev venac recognizable, leaving holes in the ground floor and canopy where needed. The play of light and sun, passing through canopies and holes in the canopy, gives a special character to the space, which, taking into account these elements, is the right place for walking, recreation and rest, right in the center of the city. The largest and most attractive open space is designed in the form of a grand staircase, which is the central gathering place. It is a hybrid dynamic space, which can become an outdoor theater. The canopy covers the perimeter of the theater, thus creating places that can become lodges for observing the events that take place in the theater. The whole project is basically, reduced to one spacious open space, only parts of which are either covered or completely enclosed. The result represents a new cultural center and an open space that connects the programs to the whole necessary to the city of Belgrade.

Technical information

The new structure is constructed using wood which emphasizes the ecological aspect of the project. The form of the canopy was modeled in the relation to the morphology of space, in order to maintain the natural aesthetic. The use of Rhinoceros and Grasshopper has contributed to the specific form of the continuous canopy which represent the core of the concept. The horizontal communications, technical rooms, and other supporting facilities are defined by glass panels. This way they are generated throughout the structure, but have different materialization and from the same are separated, packed in the discreet manner. The materialization of the existing buildings is preserved, but only keeping the facades. The specific feature of the project is the ceiling structure of the music hall. The holes formed on the canopy, in the parts where canopy becomes the roof of the hall, become windows. These windows provide additional natural light. When open, if the situation requires, the room becomes more airy and brighter. Additional quality of space is also achieved when they are closed, by introducing an element of zenital lighting. The possibility of complete blocking of light is also provided. With these principles, the environment of the hall is very easily transformed.
