Project idea

On a square plot we were demanded to design a smart Media Library that is sustainable that's auto sufficient and that exposes the latest technologies there is available to enhance the user's experience throughout the daily temporalities. Our Idea is a framework that uses architecture to gather data, use it, and maybe sell it afterwards - All of this to enhance the user experience and offer him his exact needs while roaming the Library.

Project description

The volume is a box, coated by reflective and rotating louvers that make the volume disappear in its current surroundings and the sky, hence the name Cloud. The façade opens and closes depending on the sunlight and air thermal flow needs using trackers and sensors. The access entries and interest points are made visible by a soft Booleans that permits view the Open interior space and the central vegetal Agora.

This project is an alive organism that uses data to create distinction among other libraries, it uses the concept of serendipity and guides the user through items that are predicted and might be of interest to him depending on the analysis of his digital profile.

Technical information

The architectural design process uses technological processes from Parametric Design software - (see grasshopper definition with project)
The intelligent double reflective Aluminum skin mimics the movement of the Clouds, from which the name of “Digital Cloud”.

The double skin is interrupted by boolean differences in spherical solids, thus opening from the inside the visibility towards the city, and from the outside a breakthrough towards the agora; a mineral space full of exchange for communities.

The parametric design of the double skin means that the facade is constantly changing, the sunshades installed rotate by an angle of 90 degrees, coded on predefined and variable parameters in particular: The movement of the sun - The need for light - Temperature regulation - Human movement.

This data can be collected from the outside environment (Weather Data .epw). And from inside the building (Sensor Data).
The project thus changes its facade permanently, it changes over time.

Intelligent User, Serendipity & Smart Discovery:

The human is at the center of intelligence, it is the engine of operation of the building. It assists in data collection; age groups, common interests, links ... etc (through social networks - data mining - data linguistics, collections & books ordered, fields of interest ... etc). Data can, therefore, Influence user learning. It gives him new horizons of interest based on his preferences.

Serendipity is at the heart of the Project:

The project will play the role of a playground for researchers and innovators interested in the ecology of the building, their long-term life, the behavior of the public that use the space.
It will help in the development of more advanced concepts and will use this rare collected data as a financial engine in an Entrepreneurial approach to Data.
