Project idea

The architectural art and design center is located in Levent, on Büyük Dere Street, one of the busiest and biggest streets of Istanbul. There are business centers, residences, shopping centers and many high-rise buildings on this street. This traffic and pedestrian density, that is, a structure that can attract itself against this kinetic energy with another kinetic energy. This was achieved by using kinetic facades.

Project description

The building is a experience of movement in time around the exterior and the interior. Approaching from the west, the building unfolds in the parallax of changing perspectives. At night, glowing panels of obscure of glass active the exterior. Video projection mat appear on these obcure glass walls, animating the outdoor space with art. The exterior matte translucent glass and pre-weathered titanium zinc skin share the same greenish-grey tonality, giving the building a shifting presence, from monolithic opaque to multifarious translucent, depending on the light. The kinetic façades attract attention despite the traffic and pedestrian density in the Levent and the surrounding high-rise buildings.

Technical information

BUILDINGS
The project consists of 2 buildings; one of building is the activity (art and design), the another one is the education hub. These two buildings are connected by the entrance where you can enter Büyük Dere Street to achive Hacı Adil Street. You reach this road by entering from the ground floor and exit the back yard from the -1st floor due to the floor level differences. Thus, you can visit the exhibition areas on the entrance and -1st floor.

ACTIVITY BUILDING
In this structure, there are exhibition areas and a multi-purpose hall for 500 people. Thanks to the galleries in the exhibition area, we can see the other exhibition area downstairs. On the roof floor, we can exit from the exhibition area to the terrace.

EDUCATION HUB
In this education hub, there are learning areas for kinetic sculptures and project mapping that coming from the concept. Such as; 3d modeling room, film making room, project mapping room. In addition, there is a 2-storey library with group and individual study areas and also that allows you to spend time on the activity steps overlooking the back garden.

OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES
The square, located at the main entrance, is easily accessible from the metro and bus stations. There are seating units in this square and there are "project mapping" screenings at night on the facades overlooking Büyük Dere Street, one of the busiest streets in Istanbul. The areas formed by the buildings are used as temporary exhibition areas, and the columns direct us to the back garden under the buildings.

KINETIC FACADE
A kinetic façade is one that changes dynamically rather than being static or fixed, allowing movement to occur on a building’s surface. This helps to create a ‘skin-like articulation’ effect, and is an extension of the idea that a building's envelope is an active system rather than just a container.A cladding screen made up of thin aluminium shingles which can move independently with the flow of wind to create a fluid or ripple effect across the entire surface.

PROJECT MAPPING
Projection mapping, similar to video mapping and spatial augmented reality, is a projection technique used to turn objects, often irregularly shaped, into a display surface for video projection. By using specialized software, a two- or three-dimensional object is spatially mapped on the virtual program which mimics the real environment it is to be projected on. The software can interact with a projector to fit any desired image onto the surface of that object. This technique is used by artists and advertisers alike who can add extra dimensions, optical illusions, and notions of movement onto previously static objects. The video is commonly combined with, or triggered by, audio to create an audio-visual narrative.
