The COVID-19 pandemic fundamentally shifted the way we learn. Social distancing protocols necessitated open, well-ventilated spaces, highlighting the limitations of traditional, enclosed classrooms. This period of disruption became a catalyst for reimagining learning environments.
We looked back in time, seeking inspiration from the ancient practice of learning under trees. Throughout history, trees have served as natural classrooms, fostering knowledge sharing and community gathering. From students receiving instruction under a master's watchful gaze to village leaders making crucial decisions in communal spaces (baithaks) under the shade, trees have provided a natural sanctuary for learning and dialogue.

Inspired by the way a tree utilizes sunlight, our design for the Goethe Institute learning pavilion incorporates three distinct zones. Just as a tree has permanent roots and a strong trunk, the pavilion will have dedicated spaces for administrative functions with fixed walls for privacy and security. The library and multipurpose hall, akin to the ever-changing canopy leaves, will be designed as transitional spaces. These adaptable areas can be reconfigured to accommodate diverse learning activities and events.

Design Appoarch
The pavilion embraces the legacy of learning under a tree through the design of its classrooms. Each classroom will feature a canopy-like structure that evokes the shade and atmosphere of a natural learning environment. Lush greenery will surround these classrooms, providing filtered fresh air and creating a sense of separation from the surrounding environment.
Another unique feature is our innovative use of bamboo screens. Thin bamboo strips, cut to a uniform width, will be attached to aluminum strings. These dynamic screens will rotate with the wind, creating a visually captivating and ever-changing facade. The sustainable materiality of the bamboo adds an additional layer of environmental consciousness to the design.
This learning pavilion, inspired by the enduring wisdom of the natural world, fosters a stimulating and adaptable space for the future of education.

Sustainability
The pavilion prioritizes sustainability throughout its design. The innovative bamboo screens, crafted from thin strips attached to aluminum strings, not only provide a dynamic and captivating exterior but also leverage a rapidly renewable resource. Additionally, the water channel placement optimizes wind direction, promoting natural cooling. The double-height central canopy above the classrooms facilitates stack ventilation, further reducing reliance on mechanical air conditioning. Solar panels will be strategically positioned to harness clean energy, minimizing the building's heating and cooling costs. Finally, the selection of flyashcrete bricks, bamboo, and polycarbonate sheets reinforces the commitment to sustainable construction practices. These eco-conscious choices ensure the pavilion operates in harmony with its environment.
