Idea projektu

Women’s lived experiences are different from men’s due to social and cultural values, upbringing, and gender disparity. Unique challenges are faced by women in Pakistani society, where cultural norms and assigned gender roles often confine them to the roles of homemakers and caretakers. In addition, women are typically expected to stay at home, and getting out is a luxury only men can afford. Managing the home and tending to family dictates their lifestyle. As a result, these women spend more than eight hours doing household work, undermining their overall quality of life and hindering their active participation in society, leading them to live unfulfilled lives.

This apartment project highlights women’s concerns and reshapes their reality for better-lived experiences. Through this design, going beyond economic needs to address their physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. Providing opportunities for informal and formal ways of interaction that not only uplift individual women but a whole healthy community.

Popis projektu

Drawing inspiration from traditional cultural dwellings, the design concept creates a courtyard apartment complex with an introverted community living space in stark contrast between the exterior and interior of a building that symbolizes the contrast between societal expectations and individual aspirations. Within this space, various amenities cater specifically to women’s needs, including prayer areas, communal kitchens, coworking spaces, daycare facilities, and rooftop gardens to let women be active in a community, use their knowledge and skills to be financially strong, and uplift each other.

This initiative looks holistically towards family dynamics from the eyes of a woman, a true homemaker. More than just physical infrastructure, it embodies a shift in mindset, valuing the domestic labor and care work traditionally undertaken by women. By acknowledging and elevating the significance of these contributions, the initiative aims to alleviate women’s burdens and empower them within society.
