Our architectural project in Brnenec, Czechia, reimagines the historical southern part of Schindler's Ark as a sustainable village that blends modern living with nature. This design concept imagines houses within greenhouses, allowing residents to enjoy indoor and outdoor living benefits. By preserving and repurposing some of the existing buildings, we maintain the site's historical value while introducing new communal functions. At the heart of the village is an open space dedicated to various activities, promoting a strong sense of community.
In this sustainable village, homes are thoughtfully placed around the site's perimeter, each surrounded by a greenhouse that promotes energy efficiency and a connection to nature. The central area remains open, creating a communal space for village activities. The existing buildings have been given new life, serving various purposes to support the community.
Inspired by the clean lines of Mies van der Rohe, the houses are two stories high for different family sizes. Two central buildings, known as cospaces, are designed for dining, recreation, and social gatherings, becoming the village's vibrant social hub.
An artificial lake in the village center enhances the quality of social and public life, providing a picturesque setting for relaxation and community events. We have included architectural furniture, a green market, and various pavilions surrounding the lake, all contributing to a lively and engaging communal space.
The houses within the greenhouses combine the principles of passive design with modern architecture. These greenhouses can be easily ventilated in the summer, ensuring a comfortable environment throughout the year. During winter, they offer excellent insulation, creating energy-efficient homes. Each house has private spaces within the greenhouse, while the public areas are spread throughout the village, encouraging interaction and community building.
The village layout allows car access from both sides of the road, leading to an underground parking area beneath the cospaces. This design maximizes land use and frees the central area for activities and gatherings. Integrating a green market and pavilions near the artificial lake supports local commerce and provides additional cultural and social events venues.
Our project in Brnenec respects the historical significance of the Schindler's Ark site and pioneers sustainable living. It creates a self-sufficient, environmentally friendly community where modern architecture and nature coexist harmoniously.
