Idea projektu

The project revolves around an aquatic center situated in Kyrenia, Cyprus. Its objective was to create an iconic building serving as an urban space to attract both tourists and the local population of Kyrenia. Despite its advantageous location, Kyrenia lacks urban spaces where people can enjoy themselves and meet each other . Thus, establishing an iconic urban space in this area was seen as an ideal solution to capitalize on the breathtaking views of the sea and mountains. On the other hand, the concept aimed to design an iconic building that clearly embodies its primary purpose: an aquatic center. To achieve this, opting for a shell-like shape was a strategic decision. This design choice not only evokes the essence of water but also captures the dynamic movement of waves, enhancing the play of sunlight filtering through the building's shell-like form.

Popis projektu

The project consists of two parts differing in height: the larger section spans three floors, while the smaller section spans two floors and includes a shared underground parking facility. The first part houses the main entrance, a spacious lobby, and reception area. It also features the centerpiece: a competition pool with seating for approximately 300 spectators.

The second part accommodates additional public amenities such as restaurants, a gym, a leisure area, and a diving pool. This section also incorporates various communal spaces, all surrounded by landscaped areas with outdoor spaces include public areas and seating, harmonizing with the aquatic theme of the center.

Technické informace

This aquatic center features a roof shaped like a shell with slanted facades. The building's structure incorporates Glulam timber and a truss system for the roof, supported by a compressive membrane and principal posts connected to the building via external cables. The facade includes a structural slanted glazing system supported by spider fittings and V-columns positioned on the opposite side of the slanting walls. Throughout the entire building, the curved shell shape is visible from both sides, along with roof openings that allow natural light to illuminate the interior spaces.
