Idea projektu

Juvenile delinquency poses a significant concern in Bangladesh as a substantial portion of our population comprises children, thus putting the future of our nation at risk. While juvenile legislation aims to address this issue by focusing on the juvenile, it often overlooks the root cause of the problem. Despite the intended purpose of these correctional homes to rehabilitate and prevent recidivism, the reality portrays a grim picture. Statistics reveal a concerning trend of child suicides and self-harm, shedding light on the substandard environmental conditions within these development centers and the shortcomings of Bangladesh's justice system. Bangladesh's periodic reports to the CRC (The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child) Committee acknowledge the need for improved logistics in Child Development Centers. This project aims to assess the current state of Child Development Centers in Bangladesh, including living conditions and justice procedures, while proposing a framework rooted in positive youth development. By considering children's psychology, age, and social environment, the framework seeks to create an environment akin to an educational institute rather than a detention center. This approach aims to provide female juveniles with a conducive space for learning and growth.

Popis projektu

The concept revolves around establishing a space that fosters positive development without the visual connotations of incarceration. Instead, it aims to function as an institution that supports individuals' growth in a nurturing environment while also offering ample space for their free movement.

ELIMINATING THE IMAGE OF INCARCERATION:
1. REDUCING PHYSICAL BOUNDARY WALLS.
2. BREAKING THE SOLIDITY.
3. PROMOTING FAMILIAR, HOME-LIKE COMFORTABLE ENVIRONMENT.

FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT:
1. ACCESSIBLE OPEN SPACES.
2. INCORPORATING PERSONAL SPACE TO DEVELOP THE SENSE OF OWNERSHIP.
3. CONNECTION BETWEEN SPACES.
4. HIERARCHY OF SPACES.

The primary focus of the design is to create a space for these individuals that prioritizes human connection over the traditional jail setting. Given that juvenile delinquents are often more sensitive, it's essential to provide them with a welcoming, homelike environment that fosters a sense of belonging and aids in addressing their past issues. The correctional center is not intended to resemble a jail; rather, it's envisioned as an institute aimed at their rehabilitation and growth.
Ensuring ample space within the correctional center to promote social interaction and mobility among juveniles, thereby fostering their positive development. Providing areas for sports and fun activities, spaces for religious worship for all faiths and also providing safety measures to make them feel safe.

Technické informace

This complex features structural components such as concrete columns and beams, complemented by brick walls. Additionally, elements of wood and glass are strategically integrated in specific areas. The project employs a diverse range of materials including bricks, sand, stone, cement, mud, and various others.
In this complex, a waterbody has been utilized as a security measure instead of high walls. This approach maintains unobstructed vision and eliminates the feeling of confinement. The strategic placement of staff quarters and administrative zones on opposite sides further enhances security for the juveniles residing in the dormitories.
