Surabaya, one of Indonesia's largest cities, has seen rapid growth with associated challenges such as limited space and high land prices. In west Surabaya, there is a need for buildings that offer flexible spaces and efficient circulation patterns. The purpose of designing a building at Jalan Raya Menganti Lidah Wetan No. 2 is to create an architectural structure that meets the flexible space needs of the local people and provides positive experiences for the community.
The character of the building takes from the concept of flexibility by applying a fluid façade shape (moving freely not bound by something) so that the side of the main door in the east part is given a perforate ornament plate in laser cutting and then formed slightly curved so that it resembles a wave with the use of brown color on the plate. On the first floor there's a lobby that has a drop-off area, and connecting to the indoor parking. On the second floor, the space is divided into zones with distinct functions. There is a public area featuring a café, which is accessible to everyone on the premises and can be used for meetings of 2-4 people. Additionally, there is a hall area utilized for events, capable of accommodating about 50 people in a single room, with a total of 8 rooms available. Lastly, there is a control room, which serves as the control center for lights, ceiling, and LCD screens, and is accessible only to the building's staff.
Therefore, the MFH building design must be able to create comfortable circulation, facilitate flexible use of space, and use land efficiently. Multifunctional building is a design approach that aims to unify various activities and functions located in a part of a city area. As a result, a complex structure in which all uses and facilities are interconnected within a strong framework of integration, according to (Meyer, 1983.) To make land use more efficient, service needs easier, and the environment more comfortable, this effort aims to eliminate space. Multifunctional buildings are buildings that bring together different functions and activities. In the process of problem formulation for the design of multifunctional space in Lidah Wetan, Surabaya, the most important thing is how the activities of people in a room can fit into the room and have comfortable circulation while maintaining privacy between rooms, as well as adequate public space for social activities. Additional factors include considering accessibility for all, fire safety and risk mitigation, aesthetics that match local cultural or architectural identity, assessing the impact on spatial and urban characteristics, and considering the use of modern technology to improve user experience and operational efficiency of the multifunctional hall.
