Tiny Library

Idea projektu

I designed a Tiny Library optimized for 75 users with engaging multifunctional spaces for all ages and spatial experiences. The Tiny Library would be equipped with traditional reading material along with modern formats like ebooks, audiobooks, audio-visual books, etc.

The space is designed as a centralized think tank for the local communities with a focus on activities and functions of public interactions and community development.

I considered affordability and optimum use of space while designing. The designed space is augmented to hold a maximum number of books in a limited space. The structure is about 300 sqm of built-up area.

The proposed designs are visualized as mobile or stationary. One could also develop the given space as a flexible module that can be replicated so as to adapt to different site conditions making it versatile in nature. I provided a justification for their design choices.

The designed spaces are innovative, encourage self-learning, and strengthen the communal spirit. Energy saving and sustainability should be given a thought. We encourage the participants to develop their programs. The space designed is not limited to the standard activities viz. reading and self-learning space, sanitation space, administration, reception, or information desk. The design should provoke innovative activities that stimulate and accelerate learning.

Technické informace

Metal corrugated roof and roof overhangs to reduce direct sunlight into spaces. Terracotta pots are used as filler for concrete slabs bringing in natural light. Polycarbonate sheet covering is used to prevent the entry of moisture and dirt. Spiral staircase made of bamboo poles and concrete to promote interaction and enhance experience. Cross ventilation by providing openings on both sides.

The interiors and exteriors of the project are designed to be accessible to all age groups. Interactive spaces in between give the flexibility of using it in a variety of ways as per the requirements of the community.

The famous handloom clothwork patterns are used that not only shade the open green space from the harsh sun during summers but also respond to the culture and identity of the village.
