Idea projektu

From the beginning, our task was to create living space that blended into the natural landscape. In our studio this semester we were working only on physic models. The material which I used most to create my work is stockings. That is why it is called Stocking Tents. I was inspired by spiderweb-like shape but settled on a more organic approach— a layered tents structure. I decided to design a huge, layered tent structure whole site, which follows the terrain. My structure is approximately 25 meters at its highest point due to the design decision to save the nature on our site. Our site on which we were concentrated were 2 hills in Prague 10 including bogdansky las. This area is characterized by many trees, greenery and a high degree of slope for a residential area.

Popis projektu

Basically, my building consists of 2 levels of residential space from the ground level and public space, open for everyone above it, because of the unconventional roof shape. I decided to allow the tallest trees to protrude through the roof. It creates an incredible connection between nature and architecture. And that is why I decided to use wooden tiles for the surfaces. Openings are on every surface, not just the roof, to bring light into the apartments, but also to public space. I wanted to create a structure where people could live but also spent their free time and come together, not only for tenants. Interconnected surfaces at various points make it easy for people to move around the entire structure between different levels. In that huge structure it is not that easy to get some light. The whole space inside the structure is exterior apart from the pocket apartments, which basically are located on the ground and first floor. It highlights green spaces, and the natural character of the site. One key challenge was adapting to unconventional shapes, especially connection between different levels. I wanted to maintain the unusual shape of the building, fit into the terrain and create a functional living space. In summary, my project is an idea of welcoming nature and bringing people together.

Technické informace

The steel cable net was pre-stressed to form a stable, self-supporting system. This tension in the cables created a curved surface that evenly distributed loads across the structure. The membrane material was selected for its durability and flexibility, as well as its ability to allow natural light to filter through, resulting in a bright and airy interior space. The entire structure was supported by a series of steel masts, which were strategically placed to bear the load of the tensile roof without obstructing the interior. Additionally, wooden tiles were used on surfaces to enhance the aesthetic and functional aspects of the design.
