The International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), one of the prominent film festivals of India, hosted by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy on behalf of Department of Cultural Affairs, Government of Kerala. The festival aims at presenting a selection of the best of World Cinema and a competition section exclusively for films from Asian, African and Latin American countries.

The 8 day fest conducts the screening of films in the categories International Competition, Malayalam Cinema Today, Indian Cinema Now, World Cinema, Country Focus, Retrospectives of major filmmakers, Cotemporary Focus, Homages and various curated packages. Coupled with film screenings, platforms like Open forum and workshops are also organized for the delegates to interact with film fraternities from all over the world.

As per the FIAPF rules, the festival should have a permanent venue like Cannes or Berlin. Since 2018, the International Film Festival of Kerala chose Thiruvananthapuram as a permanent venue and is being held during the months of November and December of each year.

OBJECTIVES:
• To understand the format of the festival and to build auxiliary facilities that would help in its efficient function.
• To provide IFFK with a world-class infrastructure in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala.
• To design various spaces to house the amount of people.

SCOPE:
• The IFFK has become one of the biggest festivals in India in recent years. The festival brings in more than 10000 delegates.

• The festival is currently held at multiple locations. The main venues include the Nishagandhi Auditorium on the Kanakakunnu Palace premises, where the opening and closing ceremonies of the festival are held, Tagore Theatre, and the Kerala State Film Development Corporation-owned Kairali, Sree and Nila.Apart from this, screenings are also held at Kalabhavan, Dhanya, Remya, New, Ajanta and SreePadmanabha. Exclusive screenings for the jury and media are held at a mini-screen at Aries Plex SL Cinemas.

• The venues are not completely able to handle the amount of visitors that come in. The delegates frantically moving from one theatre to another to watch films is a common sight during the IFFK.

• With a permanent venue, film buffs will experience something new and the filmy community as a whole will function better.

• A place that can become an iconic expression of creativity is needed for the IFFK since it has brought fame not only to Kerala, but to the film industry in general.

• Also, the project will boost the growth of businesses and the investment in infrastructure of the state, as well as promote tourism and thereby the economy.

Technické informace

Auditoriums and Theatres:
Long span buildings. create unobstructed, column free spaces less than 30m. with flat truss roofing supported on side columns.
Acoustics:
The best measure of acoustics performance for auditorium is reverberation time. Acoustics requirements for speech quality is different from those for music and it is difficult to design an auditorium that is satisfactory for both.
Solution:
The hall is divided into 6 zones, 2 at stage offering independent control of reverberation and early reflections create the orchestra shell effect. And 4 at the audience chamber having their own dedicated processor, with proprietary digital processing algorithms for creating natural early reflections and late reverberations as desired.
Theatre:
IMAX (large screens and taller aspect ratio) and Dolby (images with 500x high contrast ratio and more resolution) with 4k laser projectors and upgraded sound system. Theatres also accommodates facilities for both 35mm film and HD video projection.
Parametric Roofing System:
Responsive parametric roof with triangulated surface to increment the form factor of the building according the bioclimatic needs of the site to balance the gains and looses of heat. This roofing system also adds to the visual attractiveness, form coherence, and architectural sensitivity to the natural and built environments as well.
Rainwater Harvesting:
Rainwater collected from roof gutters is filtered and stored in pond.
