Idea projektu

Main component that shaped this project was the unique location of already existing University’s building. Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is placed near Austria’s, Chech Republic’s and Hungary’s boarders. This clearly implies the multicultural society of the city. The STU alongside the Freedom Square and Medical Garden is situated on one of the axises of greenery going through the city. The campus also lies in close proximity to many cultural and social institutions such as: The Presidental Palace, The Ministry of Justice or The Slovak Radio Building which has an influence on flow of pedestrians. These aspects directed the design process to create a student-friendly space, rich in vegetation to complement already existing verdure. The STU campus would also be transitioned into a more accessible and welcoming place for outside visitors.

Popis projektu

The goal of the project is to transform the STU courtyard. Current condition of the place is relatively bad. It is quite neglected and lifeless. It is mostly occupied by cars so the concept involves moving cars to an underground garage. Existing temporary buildings were removed, creating space for new vegetation and public spaces. Pedestrian communication is improved, by designing a path leading directly through the building. The laboratory building was given a new addition which is slightly rotated and sloped in a way that it’s not blocking out the view on the building of Slovak Radio Station and The National Bank building. Redesigned laboratory contains of newly added main entrance, gastronomy section, presentation, and science reaserch spaces, workshops, study rooms and a library.

Technické informace

Construction aspects of the project will largely stay as they are, due to the preservation of the Heavy Laboratories building. Main construction system will be based on existing columns and slabs, and it will be carried into underground garage, which is located beneath the existing building. Proposed transformation on the laboratories building is adding a cut in the building. The cut will be constructed with reinforced concrete with vegetation on it. Structure added to the laboratories will also be constructed with reinforced concrete. Large opening with the entrance will be double skin façade on aluminium profiles. Large planes of glass blocks will be replaced with glass panels on aluminium profiles. On the east side walls will have sections of see-through concrete.
