Connaught place, today holds significant architectural value that is unmatched to any other Central Business District in the world. It is the essence of that place that gives it the character that it has. It’s geometry, the vehicular circulation in the circle, shaded arcades and the colonnade- the iconic facade of the place! All of it contributes to make it an almost utopian design. But over the years, as the population grew, the demands increased but the land remains the same. To be able to fulfil the needs of the future, there is a need of development and redevelopment of the existing spaces. The first step is to analyse what has the strength to survive and what is important to retain to maintain the essence of the place, and whether or not the structures are safe. Considering the unsafe structural design that the buildings have evolved into, there is a need for the built mass to be redesigned.
The new design should be based on creating spaces catering to the needs of people. Connaught Place is the centre of Delhi and it belongs to the people of the city. An inclusive design, with a special focus on a pedestrian friendly environment that promotes interaction, enhances connectivity within the circle and strengthens the relationship of open vs. built spaces. Another point of focus would be breaking the circle to inculcate a sense of invitation and connection of CP with the surroundings. Through a combination of design and policy level interventions, the new proposal should aim to sensitise people about the environment and methods to revive the available natural and artificial resources.
